BLAST: CORRELATIONS IN THE COSMIC FAR-INFRARED BACKGROUND AT 250, 350, AND 500 μm REVEAL CLUSTERING OF STAR-FORMING GALAXIES

چکیده
We detect correlations in the cosmic far-infrared background due to the clustering of star-forming galaxies, in observations made with the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST), at 250, 350, and 500 μm. Since the star-forming galaxies which make up the far-infrared background are expected to trace the underlying dark matter in a biased way, measuring clustering in the far-infrared background provides a way to relate star formation directly to structure formation. We test the plausibility of the result by fitting a simple halo model to the data. We derive an effective bias beff = 2.2±0.2, effective mass log(Meff/M⊙) = 13.2 +0.3 −0.8, and minimum mass log(Mmin/M⊙) = 9.9 +1.5 −1.7. This is the first robust clustering measurement at submillimeter wavelengths. We present an analysis of CO spectroscopy and infrared-to-millimetre dust photometry of 11 bright far-infrared/submillimetre sources discovered through a combination of the Planck all-sky survey and follow-up Herschel-SPIRE imaging – “Planck’s Dusty Gravitationally Enhanced subMillimetre Sources.” Each source has a spectroscopic redshift z = 2.2–3.6 from a blind redshift search with EMIR at the...

Emission at far-infrared wavelengths makes up a significant fraction of the total light detected from galaxies over the age of Universe. Herschel provides an opportunity for studying galaxies at the peak wavelength of their emission. Our aim is to provide a benchmark for models of galaxy population evolution and to test pre-existing models of galaxies. With the Herschel Multi-tiered Extra-galac...

متن کاملHerschel-ATLAS: the angular correlation function of submillimetre galaxies at high and low redshift
We present measurements of the angular correlation function of galaxies selected from the first field of the H-ATLAS survey. Careful removal of the background from galactic cirrus is essential, and currently dominates the uncertainty in our measurements. For our 250 μm-selected sample we detect no significant clustering, consistent with the expectation that the 250 μm-selected sources are mostl...
متن کاملAn ALMA Survey of Sub-millimetre Galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South: The Far-Infrared Properties of SMGs
We exploit ALMA 870-μm (345GHz) observations of sub-millimetre sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South to investigate the far-infrared properties of highredshift sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs). Using the precisely located 870μm ALMA positions of 99 SMGs, together with 24μm and radio imaging of this field, we deblend the Herschel / SPIRE imaging of this region to extract their far-infra...
